A lot of file formats contain plain text data or packed data. In this case, it is likely that you will be able to view the contents of XLM with a normal "Notepad". This does not guarantee success, but in most cases it will allow you to see the contents of the XLM file to some extent.

As in the case of Notepad, you can also use the data archiving program. Try to open your file with e.g. Winrar or Winzip.
