CAL files are a 3ds Max pose adjustment file extension. They are used to create a complete skeleton from a single mesh or from multiple meshes.

CAL files don't necessarily have to be saved as 3ds Max poses because it can also be saved as an OBJ mesh file. But they still use the same skeleton animation data, just in a different format.
